Keep Your Geothermal System Running Efficiently
A geothermal (ground-source) heat pump is one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool a New Hampshire home. It works by moving heat between your house and the earth through an underground or well-water loop. These systems are built to last, but like any heating and cooling equipment they perform best with regular professional maintenance. Courtesy Heating and Cooling provides geothermal maintenance for homeowners across Southern and Seacoast New Hampshire from our base in Brentwood.
Routine service helps your system keep delivering the efficiency you invested in, catches small problems before they become expensive repairs, and gives you peace of mind heading into winter. Ask about our $50 Off Maintenance offer when you schedule. Call (603) 777-7749 or use the Schedule An Appointment button above.
What Geothermal Maintenance Includes
Every system is a little different. A closed-loop system circulates a water and antifreeze solution through buried pipe, while an open-loop system uses well water. Our maintenance visit is tailored to your equipment, but typically covers the following.
Loop fluid and antifreeze checks
On closed-loop systems, we check the loop fluid’s condition and, where applicable, antifreeze protection level. Proper freeze protection matters in New Hampshire, where entering water temperatures drop through the heating season. We also look for signs of air in the loop or fluid loss that could point to a leak.
Loop pressure and flow
Geothermal heat pumps need the right flow of fluid through the heat exchanger to work efficiently. We check loop pressure and flow, inspect circulator pumps or flow centers, and compare entering and leaving water temperatures to confirm the unit is moving heat as it should. On open-loop systems, we check well water flow and look for mineral scaling or sediment that can restrict the heat exchanger.
Air filters and airflow
Like any forced-air system, a geothermal heat pump depends on good airflow. We inspect and replace or clean filters, check the blower, and look for duct or register problems that reduce comfort and efficiency. Between visits, checking your filter regularly is one of the easiest things you can do yourself.
Indoor coil and condensate drain
We inspect the indoor air coil and clean it as needed, and we check that the condensate drain and pan are clear. A clogged drain can cause water leaks or shut the system down during cooling season.
Desuperheater
Many geothermal systems include a desuperheater that uses excess heat to help warm your domestic hot water. If yours has one, we check its pump and connections and make sure it’s working with your water heater.
Electrical, controls and refrigerant circuit
We inspect electrical connections, contactors and capacitors, test the thermostat and controls, and check compressor operation. Refrigerant pressures and temperatures are checked as needed to confirm the sealed system is operating properly. If your system has auxiliary or backup electric heat, we test that as well.
How Often Should Geothermal Systems Be Serviced?
Annual professional maintenance is a good rule of thumb for most homes. Many homeowners schedule it before the heating season, so the system is ready for months of steady winter operation. Open-loop systems with hard or mineral-rich well water may need more frequent attention to the heat exchanger. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your system and how it’s performing.
Signs Your Geothermal System Needs Attention
- Higher electric bills without a change in how you use the system.
- Auxiliary or emergency heat running more often than usual, which may show up as an indicator on your thermostat.
- Rooms not reaching the set temperature or uneven comfort around the house.
- Short-cycling, where the system turns on and off frequently.
- Unusual noises from the unit, pumps or ductwork.
- Water around the unit or a drain line that isn’t clearing.
- Lockouts or error codes that shut the system down.
If you notice any of these, don’t wait for your next tune-up. Our geothermal service and repair team can diagnose the problem.
Tips Between Maintenance Visits
- Check your air filter regularly and replace it when it’s dirty.
- Keep supply and return vents open and unobstructed.
- Note any thermostat messages or alerts, and tell your technician about them.
- Keep the area around the indoor unit and flow center clear for service access.
- Write down when your system was last serviced so you can stay on schedule.
Geothermal Services From Courtesy Heating and Cooling
Besides maintenance, we offer geothermal installation and geothermal repair. You can learn more about how these systems work on our geothermal heating and cooling page. If you’re comparing options, our heat pump and ductless mini-split page covers air-source heat pumps too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do geothermal systems really need maintenance?
Yes. Geothermal systems have fewer outdoor components than conventional equipment, but filters, airflow, loop fluid, pumps, drains and electrical parts all benefit from regular inspection and service to keep the system efficient and reliable.
How often should I schedule geothermal maintenance?
Annual maintenance works well for most homes, often before the heating season. Open-loop systems with hard well water may need more frequent heat exchanger attention.
Why is my geothermal system using backup heat so often?
Frequent auxiliary heat can point to problems such as low loop flow, airflow restrictions, a control issue or a system that needs service. Have it checked so you aren’t paying for more backup heat than you need.
Do you work on both closed-loop and open-loop systems?
Call us to tell us about your system. We’ll discuss your equipment and schedule the right service.
Is there a maintenance offer right now?
Yes. Ask about our $50 Off Maintenance offer when you schedule, and mention it to your technician at the time of service.
