What Is a Ducted Mini-Split?

A ducted mini-split is a heat pump with a compact indoor air handler that is hidden in an attic, closet, crawlspace or basement ceiling. Short runs of duct carry air to ceiling or wall grilles, so you get quiet heating and cooling for several rooms without a wall-mounted unit in each one. Like other mini-splits, it uses an outdoor unit connected to the indoor unit by a refrigerant line set, and it can both heat and cool. Courtesy Heating and Cooling designs and installs ducted mini-split systems for homes across Southern, Seacoast and Lakes Region New Hampshire.

When a Ducted Mini-Split Makes Sense

  • Homes without central air that have attic or basement space for an air handler and short duct runs
  • Second floors and bonus rooms that run hot in summer and cold in winter
  • Finished basements and additions that the existing system doesn’t reach well
  • Replacing an old attic air handler that only provides cooling
  • Homeowners who prefer a clean look, with grilles instead of wall units

Ducted vs. Ductless Mini-Splits

A ductless mini-split puts an indoor head on the wall of each room it serves. It’s often the simplest option when there’s no good place for ductwork. A ducted mini-split uses one concealed air handler to serve several connected rooms, so you see only grilles. Many homes use both: a ducted unit for a group of bedrooms and a ductless head for a large living area, all running off one multi-zone outdoor unit. We’ll explain the tradeoffs for your layout. For wall-mounted systems, see our heat pump and ductless mini-split installation page.

Ducted Mini-Split vs. Central Heat Pump

A central ducted heat pump usually connects to a full-size air handler or furnace and a whole-house duct system. A ducted mini-split uses a smaller, lower-profile air handler designed for shorter duct runs and a few rooms. If your home already has a full duct system in good shape, a central heat pump or central air conditioning may be the better fit. If you’re adding comfort to one floor or zone, a ducted mini-split is often easier to fit in.

What Goes Into a Good Installation

Ducted mini-splits work best when the details are right. During an estimate we look at:

  • Air handler location: enough room for service access and filter changes, and a spot where the unit can be supported properly
  • Duct design: duct sizes, lengths and grille locations matched to the air handler, plus a proper return air path
  • Condensate drainage: a reliable drain, and in an attic a secondary pan or safety switch
  • Insulation: ducts and refrigerant lines in unconditioned attics need to be insulated well to limit losses and condensation
  • Outdoor unit placement: raised above snow and kept clear of roof drip lines, with room for airflow
  • Sizing: equipment sized for the rooms it serves, based on the space, windows and insulation, not guesswork

Heating With a Ducted Mini-Split

Cold-climate ducted mini-splits can heat efficiently through much of a New Hampshire winter. Many homeowners use one alongside an existing boiler or furnace, letting the heat pump carry most of the load and keeping the other system for the coldest days. We’ll help you decide how the two systems should work together.

Keeping It Running

Ducted mini-splits need regular filter changes, a clear condensate drain and periodic coil cleaning. See our mini-split maintenance page for what a tune-up includes, or mini-split repair if your system isn’t working right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the indoor unit go?

Usually in an attic, closet, crawlspace or basement ceiling, close to the rooms it serves. Only the supply and return grilles are visible in the living space.

Can one ducted mini-split serve my whole house?

Sometimes, in a smaller home with a compact layout. More often, a ducted unit serves one floor or a group of rooms, and other zones are handled by additional units.

Is a ducted mini-split quieter than a ductless one?

The air handler is out of the room, so most people notice only the sound of air at the grilles. Good duct design helps keep it quiet.

Can I combine ducted and ductless units?

Yes. Many multi-zone outdoor units can run a mix of ducted and wall-mounted indoor units.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We offer free estimates on new installations. Call (603) 777-7749 or book online.
