Why Heat Pump Maintenance Matters
A heat pump runs in both winter and summer, so it works more hours each year than a furnace or air conditioner alone. Regular maintenance keeps it efficient, helps it hold up in cold New Hampshire weather and catches small problems before they turn into breakdowns. Courtesy Heating and Cooling maintains air-source heat pumps for homeowners across Southern and Seacoast NH.

Heat Pumps and New Hampshire Winters
Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating at low outdoor temperatures, but they depend on good airflow across the outdoor coil and a defrost system that works correctly. Snow drifts, ice falling from a roof edge, or a drain path that freezes can all affect performance. During a tune-up we look at how the outdoor unit is mounted and drained and point out anything that could cause trouble once winter sets in.
If your home also has a furnace or boiler as backup, we check how the heat pump and backup heat are set to work together, so the backup only runs when it’s actually needed.
Signs Your Heat Pump Is Overdue for Service
- Rooms take longer to reach the set temperature than they used to
- The system runs almost constantly in mild weather
- Backup or auxiliary heat comes on more often
- Weak airflow from vents
- New noises or odors when it starts
How Often Should a Heat Pump Be Serviced?
Because a heat pump runs year-round, many homeowners schedule service once or twice a year, often before the heating season. Your technician can recommend a schedule based on your system and how much you rely on it.

Homeowner Tips Between Visits
- Check the filter monthly and replace it when it looks dirty.
- Keep at least a couple of feet of clear space around the outdoor unit.
- After snowstorms, clear snow from around and on top of the outdoor unit.
- Keep supply and return vents open and unblocked.
- Don’t make big thermostat swings in winter; steady settings usually work best.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do heat pumps really need yearly maintenance?
Yes. Dirty coils and filters, worn electrical parts and drain clogs reduce efficiency and can lead to breakdowns. A tune-up catches these early.
When is the best time to schedule heat pump maintenance?
Many homeowners schedule before the heating season, since winter is when a heat pump works hardest. Some also schedule a second visit before summer.
Can I clean my outdoor unit myself?
You can keep leaves, snow and debris clear. Leave coil cleaning, electrical checks and refrigerant checks to a technician.
Is there a maintenance discount?
Yes. We currently offer $50 Off Maintenance. See our special offers page for details.
