Tank or Tankless?

Tank water heaters

A storage tank keeps a supply of hot water ready. Tanks are a familiar, straightforward option and are available for natural gas, propane and electric. The main sizing question is capacity: enough hot water for your household’s peak use, like back-to-back showers in the morning.

Tankless water heaters

A tankless unit heats water as you use it, so it doesn’t run out the way a tank can, and it mounts on the wall to save floor space. Sizing is based on flow rate: how many fixtures you run at once and how cold the incoming water is, which matters in New Hampshire winters. Tankless installs often need gas line and venting changes, and they benefit from regular descaling.

Indirect water heaters

If you have a boiler, an indirect tank heated by the boiler can be a good fit. We’ll talk through whether that makes sense for your system.

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters are another electric option, using a heat pump to heat the tank. They need room around them for air and a suitable location. Ask us whether one fits your home, and whether NHSaves or federal programs may currently offer incentives.

What Installation Includes

  • A visit to look at your current setup, fuel, venting, space and hot water needs
  • A clear recommendation and a free estimate
  • Removal of the old water heater
  • Installation with proper water, gas or electrical connections and venting
  • A temperature and pressure relief valve with a proper discharge line, and an expansion tank where needed
  • Startup, testing for leaks and proper operation, and setting the temperature
  • A walkthrough of how to care for your new unit

When to Replace

  • The tank itself is leaking
  • Hot water is rusty or runs out much sooner than it used to
  • Repairs are becoming frequent
  • Your household’s hot water needs have changed

If you’re not sure, we can check it first. See water heater repair.

After Installation

Annual water heater maintenance, flushing a tank or descaling a tankless unit, helps your new heater perform well for years. See all water heater services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size water heater I need?

For tanks, it’s about capacity for your peak hot water use. For tankless, it’s about flow rate and incoming water temperature. We’ll size it during the estimate.

Can I switch from a tank to tankless?

Often, yes. It may require changes to the gas line, venting and electrical. We’ll let you know what’s involved.

Do you install electric and propane water heaters?

Yes. We install natural gas, propane and electric models, as well as indirect tanks for boiler systems.

Are there rebates for efficient water heaters?

NHSaves and federal programs may offer incentives for some high-efficiency models. Programs change, so ask us when you call.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Call us or book online to schedule one.
