Boiler Service You Can Count On All Winter

Hot-water and steam boilers heat a large share of New Hampshire homes, especially older houses with baseboard, radiators or radiant floors. When a boiler stops working in January, you need it fixed quickly and correctly. Courtesy Heating and Cooling repairs, maintains and installs oil and gas boilers for homeowners across Southern and Seacoast New Hampshire from our base in Brentwood.

Boiler Repair

Boiler problems often start small and get worse. We diagnose the whole system, which includes the boiler, burner, controls, circulators, expansion tank, relief valve and zone valves. That way we fix the actual cause, not just the symptom.

Common boiler problems we fix

  • No heat or not enough heat in one or more zones
  • Short-cycling or a burner that won’t stay lit
  • Banging, gurgling or whistling in the boiler or pipes
  • Pressure problems or a relief valve that’s dripping or discharging
  • Leaks around the boiler, fittings or near zone valves and circulators
  • Circulator pump or zone valve failures that leave part of the house cold
  • Soot, odors or ignition problems on oil-fired equipment

If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 first. Then call us once it’s safe.

Boiler Replacement and Installation

When a boiler is old, unreliable or expensive to run, replacement often makes more sense than continued repairs. We install high-efficiency oil and gas boilers, and we size each one for your home’s heating load instead of simply matching the old unit’s rating. Older boilers were often oversized, and a right-sized modern boiler can run more efficiently and more quietly.

What a boiler installation includes

  • An in-home assessment of your heating load, distribution system, venting and fuel
  • Equipment recommendations with a clear written estimate
  • Removal of the old boiler and installation of the new one, with proper piping, controls and venting
  • Startup, combustion and safety testing, and a walkthrough of your new system

Many boilers can also supply domestic hot water through an indirect tank. We’ll talk through options for your household. If you’re thinking about adding air conditioning at the same time, a ductless mini-split or heat pump can work alongside your boiler.

Boiler Maintenance

An annual tune-up keeps your boiler safe and efficient and helps prevent mid-winter breakdowns. Depending on your system, maintenance may include burner cleaning and adjustment, nozzle and filter replacement on oil equipment, combustion testing, checking pressure and the expansion tank, testing safety controls, and inspecting circulators and zone valves. See our heating maintenance page, and ask about our $50 Off Maintenance offer.

Hot-Water and Steam Boilers

Most New Hampshire boilers heat water that circulates through baseboard, radiators or radiant floors. Older homes may have steam boilers, which work differently and have their own needs: a steady water level, working vents and properly pitched piping. We work on both, and we’ll tell you which type you have and what that means for repairs or replacement.

Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Boiler

  • Repairs are becoming more frequent or more expensive
  • Leaks from the boiler itself rather than from fittings or valves
  • Fuel use is climbing without a change in how you heat the house
  • Rooms or zones that are hard to keep warm even after repairs
  • Replacement parts that are hard to find for an older model

None of these means you must replace right away. We’ll explain what we find so you can decide.

Boilers and Hot Water

Many boilers also make domestic hot water through an indirect tank, and some wall-hung boilers have hot water built in. If your hot water is running out, the problem may be in the boiler, its controls or the tank. See our water heater repair and water heater installation pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

It depends on the boiler’s age and condition, how often it needs repairs, how efficiently it runs and the cost of the repair. We’ll give you an honest assessment of both options.

Why is my boiler making banging or gurgling noises?

Common causes include air in the system, low water, sediment, or problems with pressure or circulation. Have it checked so a small issue doesn’t turn into a bigger one.

Do you install both oil and gas boilers?

Yes. We repair and install oil and gas boilers, and we’ll help you weigh fuel options for your home.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year is a good rule of thumb for most homes, ideally before the heating season starts.

Can I add air conditioning to a house with boiler heat?

Yes. Ductless mini-splits are a common way to add cooling to homes with boiler heat, because they don’t need ductwork.
