Heat Pump Repair for New Hampshire Homes

A heat pump does double duty, heating your home in winter and cooling it in summer, so when it stops working you notice right away. Courtesy Heating and Cooling repairs air-source heat pumps for homeowners across Southern and Seacoast New Hampshire, including ducted systems and cold-climate models designed for our winters.

Call (603) 777-7749 or use the Schedule An Appointment button above.

Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair

  • Blowing lukewarm or cool air in heating mode
  • Not cooling in summer, or cooling slowly
  • Heavy ice on the outdoor unit that doesn’t clear with defrost cycles
  • Short-cycling, turning on and off frequently
  • Unusual noises such as grinding, rattling or loud buzzing
  • Error codes on the thermostat or indoor equipment
  • Higher electric bills without a change in how you use the system
  • Water leaking near the indoor air handler

Some frost on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather is normal; the unit melts it off during defrost. A thick block of ice that stays, or a unit that won’t run at all, is a reason to call.

How We Diagnose a Heat Pump

A heat pump is a system, not a single part. Our technician checks the thermostat and controls, power and safeties, the outdoor fan and compressor, the reversing valve, defrost controls, sensors, refrigerant operating pressures, the indoor blower, filter and coil, and the condensate drain. Then we explain what failed, what it takes to fix it and your options before any work starts.

Common heat pump repairs

  • Failed capacitors, contactors and relays
  • Outdoor fan motor and blower motor problems
  • Defrost control and sensor faults
  • Reversing valve issues that leave the system stuck in heating or cooling
  • Refrigerant leaks, located and repaired before recharging
  • Clogged condensate drains and drain pump failures
  • Thermostat wiring and communication problems

Repair Offers

We currently offer Free Diagnostic With Repair and 15% Off Repairs. See our special offers page for details, and mention them when you call.

Repair or Replace?

Most heat pump problems can be repaired. If your system is older, has had repeated failures or no longer keeps up with the house, we’ll give you an honest comparison of repair versus replacement. If replacement makes sense, see our heat pump and ductless mini-split installation page.

What You Can Check First

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to the right mode and temperature.
  • Check and replace a dirty air filter.
  • Look for a tripped breaker or a switched-off disconnect near the outdoor unit.
  • Clear snow, ice or leaves from around the outdoor unit. Don’t chip ice off the coil.

Keep It Running With Maintenance

Many repair calls trace back to dirty coils, clogged filters or drains, and worn electrical parts that a tune-up would catch. Ask about heat pump maintenance. If you have wall-mounted units, see mini-split repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

During a defrost cycle a heat pump can briefly blow cooler air, which is normal. If it blows cool air for long periods, it may be low on refrigerant, have a defrost or reversing valve problem, or have a failed outdoor fan or compressor component. Call us for a diagnosis.

Is ice on my outdoor unit a problem?

Light frost is normal in cold, damp weather. A thick layer of ice that doesn’t clear, or ice on the top of the unit, can point to a defrost, airflow or refrigerant problem and should be checked.

Do you repair all heat pump brands?

We service and repair most major brands of air-source heat pumps. Call us with your model and the problem you’re seeing.

Do you offer any repair discounts?

Yes. We currently offer Free Diagnostic With Repair and 15% Off Repairs. See our special offers page for details.

Should I turn off my heat pump if it’s making a loud noise?

If you hear grinding, scraping or loud banging, turn the system off at the thermostat and call us. Running it can cause more damage.
